Telekomünikasyon, teknolojik araçlarla, özellikle de elektrik sinyalleriyle veya elektromanyetik dalgalarla mesafeden iletişimdir. Uzak mesafe iletişim için modern teknolojiler genellikle telgraf, telefon ve teleprinter, ağlar, radyo, mikrodalga iletim, fiber optik ve iletişim uyduları gibi elektrik ve elektromanyetik teknolojileri içerir. Kablosuz telekomünikasyonda bir devrim, Guglielmo Marconi'nin radyo iletişiminde öncü gelişmelerle 1900'lü yıllarda başladı. Marconi çabaları için 1909'da Nobel Fizik Ödülü'nü kazandı.
