Termiyonik emisyon
Termiyonik emisyon, bir yüzeyden veya bir potansiyel enerji bariyerinden yük taşıyıcıların ısı tarafından indüklenen akışımdır. Bunun nedeni, taşıyıcıya verilen termal enerji, metalin iş fonksiyonu olarak da bilinen bağlama potansiyelini aşmasıdır. Yük taşıyıcılar elektron veya iyon olabilir ve eski literatürde bazen "termiyon" olarak anılır. Emisyondan sonra, yayılan toplam şarjın işaretinde zıt ve büyüklükte eşit olan bir şarj başlangıçta emisyon bölgesinde geride kalır. Ancak gönderici bir aküye bağlıysa, arta kalan şarj akümülatör tarafından gönderilen şarj ile nötralize edilir ve yayınlanan yük taşıyıcıları göndericiden uzaklaşır ve son olarak gönderici emisyon öncesi aynı hâldedir. Termiyonik emisyonun klasik örneği, bir vakum tüpündeki bir sıcak katottan vakum içine elektron salınımıdır. Sıcak katot bir metal filament, kaplanmış bir metal filament veya geçiş metallerinden oluşan metal veya karbitler veya borürlerin ayrı bir yapısı olabilir. Metallerden gelen vakum emisyonu yalnızca 1000 K üzerindeki sıcaklıklarda önem kazanma eğilimi gösterir.
