Timus, bağışıklık sisteminin uzmanlaşmış bir organıdır. Timusta adaptif bağışıklık sistemi için kritik olan T hücreleri olgunlaşır. Her T hücresi, reseptörü ile tanımladığı yabancı bir maddeye saldırır. T hücreleri, gen parçalarını rastgele karıştırarak üretilen reseptörlere sahiptir. Her T hücresi farklı bir antijene saldırır. Vücudun kendi proteinlerine saldıran T hücreleri timusta yok edilir. Timik epitel hücreleri, vücudun başka yerlerinden gelen önemli proteinleri eksprese eder. Birincisi, T hücreleri, "pozitif seçilim" e girerek, hücrenin timik epitelyal hücreler tarafından eksprese edilen benlik MHC ile temas etmesini sağlar; Hiçbir etkileşime girmemiş olanlar yok edilir. İkincisi, T hücresi, yüksek afiniteli etkileşime sahip T hücrelerinin apoptoz yoluyla ortadan kaldırıldığı ve ara afinite canlı olan timik dendritik hücre ile etkileşerek "Negatif Seleksiyon" a uğrar. Timus iki özdeş lobdan oluşur ve anatomik olarak ön üst mediastende kalbin önünde ve göğüs kemiğinin arkasında bulunur. Histolojik olarak, timüsün her lobu merkezi bir medulla ve bir dış kapsülle çevrelenmiş bir periferik korteks olarak ayrılabilir.
