Bir kiremit, çatıları, zemini, duvarları, duşları ya da masaüstü gibi başka nesneleri kaplamak için genellikle kullanılan seramik, taş, metal ya da cam gibi sert giyilen bir malzemeden üretilmiştir. Alternatif olarak, kiremit bazen duvar ve tavan uygulamaları için genellikle kullanılan perlit, ahşap ve mineral yün gibi hafif malzemelerden yapılmış benzer birimleri ifade edebilir. Bir başka deyişle, kiremit, oyun oynamakta kullanılan dikdörtgen sayaçlar gibi bir inşaat kiremiti veya benzeri bir nesnedir. Sözcük Fransızca sözcüğünden tuile türetilmiştir, bu da Latince tegula sözcüğünden, yani ateşlenmiş kilten oluşan bir kiremit anlamındadır. Fayans genellikle duvar ve zemin kaplamaları oluşturmak için kullanılır ve basit kiremitlerden kompleks mozaikler arasında değişebilir. Fayanslar çoğunlukla iç kullanımlar için sırlanmış, çatı kaplaması için sırsız seramikten imal edilmiş olup cam, mantar, beton ve diğer kompozit malzemeler ve taş gibi diğer malzemeler de yaygın olarak kullanılmaktadır.
