Totemizm, her insanın genellikle "ruhsal varlık" ya da "totem" olarak adlandırılan bir hayvan ya da bitki gibi başka bir fiziksel varlıkla ruhsal bağlantıya ya da akrabalık ilişkisine sahip olduğu düşünülen bir inanç sistemidir. Totemin belirli bir akrabalık grubu veya bir bireyle etkileşim kurduğu ve onların amblemi veya sembolü olarak hizmet ettiği düşünülmektedir. Totem terimi Ojibwa sözcüğü ototemanından türetilmiştir, bu da "kişinin kardeşi kimliğini" ifade eder. Dilbilgisel kök ote, aynı anneli ve birbirleriyle evlenemeyen kardeşler arasındaki kan bağını ifade eder.
