Bir transformatör, elektromanyetik indüksiyon yoluyla iki veya daha fazla devre arasında enerji aktaran bir elektrikli cihazdır. Transformatörün birincil sargısında değişen bir akım, çekirdekte değişen bir manyetik akı ve sekonder sargıyı etkileyen değişken bir manyetik alan yaratır. Sekonderdeki bu değişen manyetik alan, sekonder sargısında değişken bir elektromotor kuvveti veya voltajı indükler. Faraday Yasasını, yüksek manyetik geçirgenlik çekirdeği özellikleriyle birlikte kullanarak, güç şebekelerinde AC voltajlarını bir voltaj seviyesinden diğerine verimli bir şekilde değiştirmek üzere transformatörler tasarlanabilir. Transformatörler, RF transformatörlerinden, hacim olarak küçük bir cm3 fraksiyonuna kadar, yüzlerce ton ağırlığa sahip güç şebekesini birbirine bağlayan birimler arasında değişir. Elektronik ve elektrik güç uygulamalarında çok çeşitli trafo tasarımları kullanılmaktadır. İlk sabit potansiyel transformatörünün 1885'teki buluşundan beri, transformatörler AC enerjisinin iletimi, dağıtımı ve kullanılması için gerekli hale gelmiştir.
