Triptamin, bitkilerde, mantarlarda ve hayvanlarda bulunan monoamin alkaloiddir. Bir indol halka yapısı içerir ve adını türettiği amino asit triptofana yapısal olarak benzerdir. Triptamin, memelilerin beyinlerinde az miktarda bulunur ve bir nöromodülatör veya nörotransmitter olarak rol oynadığı düşünülmektedir. Triptamin kimyasal yapısı, toplu olarak triptaminler olarak adlandırılan bir grup bileşik için omurgadır. Bu grup, nörotransmitterler ve psychedelic ilaçlar da dahil olmak üzere birçok biyolojik olarak aktif bileşik içerir. Sıçan beyinlerinde triptamin konsantrasyonu yaklaşık 3.5 pmol / g'dir.
