Ultramicroscope
Bir ultramikroskop küçük parçacıkların görüntülenmesine izin veren bir aydınlatma sistemi bulunan bir mikroskoptur. Bir parçacık çapı, görünür ışık dalga boyunun altında veya yakınında olduğunda, olağan ışıklandırma yöntemiyle parçacık hafif bir mikroskopta görülemez. Ultramikroskop sistemi ışığın yansıması değil ışık saçılması üzerine kuruludur. Sistemde, gözlenecek parçacıklar bir sıvı veya gaz koloide dağıtılır. Koloit, ışık emici, koyu bir muhafaza içine yerleştirilir ve bir taraftan giren yoğun ışık yoğunluklu bir ışınla aydınlatılır. Işık kolloid parçacıklarına çarpılacaktır. Işık saçılmasına ilişkin tartışmalarda, yakınsayan kirişe "Tyndall konisi" adı verilir. Sahne, ışık barınağı yönüne dik açılarla yerleştirilen sıradan bir mikroskop kullanılarak görüntülenir. Mikroskop altında, tek tek parçacıklar düzensiz hareket eden küçük bulanık lekeler gibi görünürler. Işık saçılması, ışık yansımasından daha bulanık görüntüler ürettiği için noktalar doğal olarak bulanıktır. Parçacıklar lekelerin hareketine neden olan çoğu sıvı ve gaz kolloid türünde Brown hareketlidir.
