Bilimsel olarak adlandırılmak üzere, bir araştırma metodu, akıl yürütme esaslarına bağlı ampirik ve ölçülebilir kanıtlara dayanmalıdır. Oxford English Dictionary, bilimsel yöntemi, "17. yüzyıldan beri doğal bilimi karakterize eden, sistematik gözlem, ölçüm ve deneme ile hipotezlerin formülasyonu, testi ve modifikasyonundan oluşan bir yöntem veya prosedür" olarak tanımlar. Bilimsel yöntemi bilgiyi edinme yöntemlerinden ayıran başlıca özellik, bilim insanlarının gerçekliği kendi adına konuşmalarına, teorinin tahminleri doğrulandığında bir teoriyi desteklemelerine ve tahminlerinin yanlış olduğuna inandıklarında bir teoriye meydan okumaya çabalamaya çalıştıklarına inanmaktadır. Prosedürler, soruşturmanın bir alanından farklı olmasına rağmen tanımlanabilir özellikler, bilimsel araştırmayı diğer bilgi edinme yöntemlerinden ayırır.
