Uranian, üçüncü cinsiyetten birine gönderme yapan 19. asır bir terimdir -özellikle cinsel olarak erkeklere çekilen ve daha sonra eşcinsel cinsiyet değişken dişillerini kapsayacak şekilde genişletilen "erkek bedeninde bir kadın ruhu" bulunan bir kişidir ve bir sayı diğer cinsel tipler. İlk kez aktivist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs tarafından "Forschungen über das Räthsel der mannmännlichen Liebe" başlığı altında toplanan beş kitapçık dizisinde Urning adlı Almanca kelimenin İngiliz uyarlaması olduğuna inanılmaktadır. Ulrich, 1869'da Karl-Maria Kertbeny tarafından anonim olarak basılan bir broşürde görülen "homoseksüel" teriminin ilk kamuoyu tarafından kullanılmadan önce terminolojisini geliştirdi. Uranian kelimesi Ulrichs tarafından Tanrı Uranüs'ün testislerinden yaratılan Yunan tanrıça Aphrodite Urania'dan türemiştir. Bu nedenle Aphrodite Dionea heteroseksüel cinsiyeti temsil ederken, homoseksüel cinsiyetten bahsediyor.
