Bir vokoder insan konuşmasını çoğaltmak için kullanılan bir analiz / sentez sistemidir. Enkoderde, giriş çok bantlı bir filtreden geçirilir, her bant bir zarf takipçisinden geçirilir ve zarf takipçilerinden gelen kontrol sinyalleri dekodere iletilir. Kod çözücü, bu kontrol sinyallerini, sentezleyicideki ilgili filtrelere uygular. Kontrol sinyalleri, orijinal konuşma dalga formuna kıyasla yalnızca yavaş yavaş değiştiğinden, konuşmayı iletmek için gerekli bant genişliği azaltılabilir. Bu, daha fazla konuşma kanalının bir radyo devresini veya denizaltı kablosunu paylaşmasına olanak tanır. Kontrol sinyallerinin şifrelenmesiyle, ses iletimi kesime karşı korunabilir.
