Boğmaca Vinçesi, en uzun Kuzey Amerika kuşu, boğucu sesiyle adlandırılan nesli tükenmekte olan bir vinç türüdür. 2003'te yaklaşık 153 çift boğmaca vardı. Sandhill Vinç ile birlikte, Kuzey Amerika'da bulunan sadece iki vinç türünden biridir. Bocurgat Vinç'in ömrünün, vahşi olarak 22 ila 24 yıl olduğu tahmin edilmektedir. Regülasyonsuz avlanma ve 1941 yılına kadar sadece 21 vahşi ve iki esir Boğmaca vinçlerine habitat kaybıyla yok olma eşiğine itildikten sonra, koruma çabaları sınırlı bir düzelmeye yol açtı. 2011 yılı itibariyle, vahşi doğada 437 kuş, esarette 165'den fazla kuş var.
