Sözcük işlemci, kullanıcı tarafından yönlendirildiği şekilde, herhangi bir yazılı materyalin bileşimi, düzenlenmesi, biçimlendirilmesi ve bazen yazdırılması gibi kelime işlemeyi gerçekleştiren bir elektronik cihaz veya bilgisayar yazılımı uygulamasıdır. Kelime işlemesi, bazen özel olarak değiştirilmiş daktilo ile uzmanlaşmış bağlamlarda kullanılan gelişmiş kısaltma tekniklerine de işaret edebilir. Terim, 1960'lı yıllarda IBM'in Böblingen, Batı Almanya Laboratuarı'nda üretildi. Bir kelime işlemcinin tipik özellikleri arasında yazı tipi uygulaması, yazım denetimi, dilbilgisi denetimi, yerleşik bir eş anlamlılar listesi, otomatik metin düzeltme, Web entegrasyonu ve HTML dışa aktarma gibi özellikler bulunur. En basit biçiminde bir kelime işlemci, hataları düzeltmeyi kolaylaştıran büyük pahalı bir daktilodan çok daha fazlasıdır. Sözcük işlemci, 1970'lerde ve 1980'lerde, elektrikli bir daktilo yazısının klavye metin girişi ve yazdırma işlevlerini metnin düzenlenmesi için özel bir bilgisayar işlemcisi ile birleştirerek tek başına bir büro makinesi olarak ortaya çıktı.
