Katı-hal fiziğinde, çalışma fonksiyonu, bir katıdan katı yüzeyin hemen dışındaki vakumdaki bir noktaya bir elektron çıkarmak için gereken minimum termodinamik iştir. Burada "hemen", nihai elektron pozisyonunun atomik ölçekte yüzeyden uzakta olduğu, ancak yine de vakumdaki ortam elektrik alanlarından etkilenmek için katıya çok yakın olduğu anlamına gelir.
