M.Ö. 4. binyıl civarında, Mezopotamya'daki ticaret ve idarenin karmaşıklığı insanın hafızasını geride bıraktı ve yazı işleri işlemlerin kalıcı bir şekilde kaydedilmesi ve sunulması için daha güvenilir bir yöntem haline geldi.
