Kartezyen koordinat sistemi
Bir kartezyen koordinat sistemi, her bir noktayı aynı düzlemde aynı uzunlukta ölçülen noktadan iki sabit dikey doğrultu çizgisine kadar işaretli mesafeler olan bir çift sayısal koordinatlarla bir düzlemde tek tek belirten bir koordinat sistemidir. Her referans çizgisine bir koordinat ekseni veya sadece sistemin ekseni denir ve karşılaştıkları nokta, genellikle sipariş edilen çifte ait orijinidir. Koordinatlar, noktanın iki eksen üzerine dikey projeksiyonlarının pozisyonları olarak tanımlanabilir ve orijinalden işaretli uzaklıklar olarak ifade edilir. Aynı prensibi, üç boyutlu uzayda herhangi bir noktanın konumunu üç Kartezyen koordinat ile belirtmek için kullanabiliriz; bunun işaretli mesafeleri birbirine dik üç uça işaret eder. Genelde n Kartezyen koordinatlar, herhangi bir boyut n için n-boyutlu Öklid uzayındaki noktayı belirtir. Bu koordinatlar, işaretten noktaya kadar, noktadan n karşılıklı dik hiperdüzeye olan mesafelere eşittir.
