Bir yıl, Güneş'in etrafında yörüngesinde hareket eden Yörünge dönemidir. Dünya üzerindeki bir gözlemci için Güneş'in, ekliptik boyunca zodyak boyunca bir rotayı tamamlaması için geçen süreye karşılık gelir. Astronomide Julian yılı, her biri 86400 SI saniyelik 365.25 gün olarak tanımlanan bir zaman birimi. Yıl için bir evrensel olarak kabul edilmiş bir sembol yok. Uluslararası Birim Sistemleri bir tane önermiyor. Uluslararası kullanımda ortak bir kısaltma a, İngilizcede y ya da yr'dir. Dünya'nın eksenel eğimine bağlı olarak, bir yıl boyunca, mevsim geçişleri, hava değişiklikleri, gün ışığı saatleri ve dolayısıyla bitki örtüsü ve doğurganlık ile kendini gösterir. Ilıman ve subpolar bölgelerde genel olarak dört mevsim vardır: bahar, yaz, sonbahar ve kış, astronomik olarak ekinoks ve gündönüm noktalarına ulaşan Güneş işareti, iklimsel mevsimler ise astronomik belirteçlerin gerisindedir. Bazı tropik ve subtropikal bölgelerde yağışlı mevsime karşı kuru mevsimlik konuşmak daha yaygındır.
