Yugoslavya 20. yüzyılın çoğunda Güneydoğu Avrupa'da bir ülkeydi. Birinci Dünya Savaşı'ndan sonra 1918'de Slovenya, Hırvatlar ve Sırp geçici devletinin eski bağımsız Sırbistan Krallığı ve Karadağ Krallığı'yla birleşmesiyle Sırplar, Hırvatlar ve Slovenların Krallığı adı altında var olmuştur. Sırp kraliyet Karađorđević Evi, Yugoslav hanedan oldu. Yugoslavya, 13 Temmuz 1922'de Paris'teki Büyükelçiler Konferansı'nda uluslararası bir tanınma elde etti. Ülkeye Güney Slav halklarından alıntı yapıldı ve yüzölçümü takiben bölgelerin Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ve Avusturya-Macaristan'ın bir parçası olduğu ilk birliğini oluşturdu. 3 Ekim 1929'da Yugoslavya Krallığı olarak değiştirildi, 6 Nisan 1941'de Eksen güçleri tarafından istila edildi. 1943'te Partizan direnişi tarafından Demokratik bir Federal Yugoslavya ilan edildi. 1944'de kral bunu meşru hükümet olarak kabul etti, ancak Kasım 1945'te monarşi kaldırıldı. Yugoslavya 1946 yılında bir komünist hükümet kurulduğunda Yugoslavya Federal Halk Cumhuriyeti olarak yeniden adlandırıldı. Istria, Rijeka ve Zadar bölgelerini İtalya'dan satın aldı.

Dünya Savaşı'ndan önce Avusturya-Macaristan'a ait bölgeler; adı 1929'da Sırplar, Hırvatlar ve Slovenyalılar'dan Yugoslavya'ya değiştirildi; 1941-44'teki Alman istilasına, esasen 1945 yılında bir halk cumhuriyeti ilan eden Tito liderliğindeki bir Komünist grup tarafından direndi; 1963'te Sosyalist Yugoslavya Federal Cumhuriyeti oldu; 1991'de Slovenya, Hırvatistan ve Bosna-Hersek bağımsızlık ilan ettiler; onu 1992'de Makedonya izledi; Sırbistan ve Karadağ, daha sonra Sırbistan ve Karadağ'ın yerini alacak olan Yugoslav Federal Cumhuriyeti'ni kurdu.
