Zerdüştçü olarak da bilinen Zerdüşt Zerdüştlüğün kurucusu idi. Eski Avestan'ın anadili ve İran Platosu'nun doğusundaki yaşadığı halde doğduğu yer belirsizdir. Yasna Haptanghaiti'nin yazarlığı ve Zerdüşt düşüncesinin liturjik temelinde olan ilahiler Gathas'a layık görüldü. Hayatının büyük kısmı Zerdüştçe metinlerle bilinir. Zerdüşt tarafından konuşulan ve Yasna Haptanghaiti ve Gathas'ı arkeolojik ve dilsel gerekçelerle bestelemek için kullanılan Avestan, muhtemelen 2. Milenyum'un ilk yarısında konuşuluyordu.
