Kimya ve fizikte, atom kimyasal özelliklerini değiştirmeden kimyasal element içinde bulunan en küçük parçacıktır. Atom kelimesi aslında bulunabilen en küçük parçacık olmayan parçacık anlamındadır, ancak terim bilimde belirli bir anlam taşındıktan sonra bulunan atomlar daha da bölünebilir ve atom altı parçacıklardan oluşur. Çoğu atomlar, dış özelliklerini belirleyen üç atom altı parçacık türü içerirler: ▪ negatif bir yüke ve bu üç parçacık arasında en küçüğü olan elektronlar ▪ pozitif yüklü ve elektronlardan yaklaşık 1836 kat daha büyük olan protonlar; ve ■ yüklü olmayan ve elektronlardan yaklaşık 1839 kat daha büyük nötronlar.
