Çanakkale - Balkan Yarımadası ve Küçük Asya arasındaki boğaz, Marmara Denizi ile Ege Denizi'ni birbirine bağlar. Uzunluğu 120,5 km, genişliği 1,3-18,5 km, ana limanlar Gelibolu ve Çanakkale'dir. Antik çağda Hellespont olarak bilinir. Marmara Denizi'nden Ege Denizi'ne gçlü bir akım akmaktadır. Karadeniz'e giden yol üzerindeki ikinci dar boğaz olan Boğaz'ın yanında. Boğaz, Avrupa ile Anadolu arasındaki su yolunun bir parçasıydı. Adı, boğazın sularında hayatını kaybeden Helle'in efsanevi isminden türemiştir. Yunanca Hellespontos "Deniz Helle" anlamına gelir. Ayrıca "Hellen Köprüsü" olarak tercüme edildi. Dar boğazı, çevreleyen kasabaların zenginliğinin kaynağı olan akan gemileri kontrol etmek için mükemmel bir yerdi. Bunların en eskisi olan Troy, yıkımı muhtemelen Yunanlıların metallerini ücretsiz ithal etme arzusundan kaynaklanıyordu. 1. binyılın ilk yarısında, p.n.e. Yunanlılar, Hellespont'tan çok sayıda koloni kurdu. M.Ö. 6. yüzyılın sonundaki Pers askerleri. ve 480 p.n.e. tekneden köprü üzerindeki boğayı geçti.

W starożytności znana jako Hellespont. Przez cieśninę przepływa silny prąd z morza Marmara do Morza Egejskiego. Jest, obok Bosforu, drugim wąskim gardłem na drodze do Morza Czarnego. Cieśnina stanowiła część szlaku wodnego biegnącego między Europą i Anatolią. Nazwa wywodzi się od imienia mitycznej Helle, która zginęła w wodach cieśniny. Greckie Hellespontos oznacza "Morze Helle". Tłumaczono ją także jako "most Hellenów". Wąska cieśnina była doskonałym miejscem do kontroli przepływających statków, co stanowiło źródło bogactwa okolicznych miast. Najwcześniejszym z nich była Troja, której zniszczenie było spowodowane najprawdopodobniej chęcią zapewnienia sobie swobodnego importu metali przez Greków. W pierwszej połowie I tysiąclecia p.n.e. Grecy założyli nad Hellespontem liczne kolonie. Wojska perskie pod koniec VI w. p.n.e. oraz w 480 r. p.n.e. przekroczyły cieśninę po moście z łodzi.
