W pierwszym przypadku zginęło 160 osób, a w drugim - 61 osób. Po tsunami w 1946 powstał system wczesnego ostrzegania przed tsunami Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. Miasto zgodnie klasyfikacją klimatów Köppena z leży w strefie tropikalnego klimatu lasów deszczowych
