Lotus ya da lotus ağacı, Yunan mitolojisinin iki geçmişinde görülen fantastik bir bitkidir: Odisseia ve Homero ve Ovid'in Metamorfoses ve Fasti'sinde, aynı zamanda Eski Kitap'ın [3] kitabında da söz edilmiştir. [3] Eski Pliny tarafından [4] ve Muhammed tarafından [1] Odyssey'de, lotus, misyonunu unutan yiyen kişiyi balın tatlı kokusuyla çiçek şeklinde bir besindir. Odysseus, adayı keşfetmek için üç kişiyi gönderdi; bunlara lotus yiyenlerin toprakları deniyordu ve bu insanlar zorla sürüklenerek gemilere dönmek istemiyorlardı ağlıyordu. Odysseus hızlı bir şekilde bu adadan ayrıldı, diğer erkekler lotusu yedi ve eve dönmek istemedi. [5] Bu nedenle lotofago terimi, tedirgin bir hayatı ve şehvetin yolunu tutan birisine uygulanır. Fasti'de, Ovid, alkolün etkisiyle yatan nevresel Loti'nin neredeyse tecavüz edeceği bir masal kaydetti.

O lotos ou árvore de lótus é uma planta fantástica que aparece em duas histórias da mitologia grega: a Odisseia e Homero[1] e em Metamorfoses e Fasti de Ovídio,[2] que também é mencionada no Livro de Jó[3] do Antigo Testamento, por Plínio, o Velho[4] e por Maomé.[1] Na Odisseia, lotos era uma comida em forma de flor, com aroma suave de mel, que fazia a pessoa que a comia esquecer a sua missão. Odisseu enviou três homens para explorar a ilha, chamada terra dos comedores de lotos, e estes homens não quiseram voltar aos navios, sendo arrastados à força, chorando. Odisseu foi rapidamente embora desta ilha, antes que os outros homens comessem o lotos e não quisessem mais voltar para casa.[5] [6] O termo lotófago é por isso aplicado a alguém que leva uma vida despreocupada e de luxúria.[1] Em Fasti, Ovídio narra uma história de quase violação da ninfa Lótis, que dormia sob efeitos do álcool.
