măc- sau
moc-, care indică ideea de „obiect rotund, măciulie”,
cf. moacă, măciucă. Sing. *
măg sau *
mog s-ar fi reconstituit în
măgură, pe baza
pl. măguri. Pentru semantism,
cf. bot, sp. morro „obiect rotund” și „muncel” și, la fel,
ngr. μάγουλον „urmă de roată”, față de μάγουλα „deal” (de unde
mr. măgulă „deal”,
alb. maguljë „colnic”).
Ngr. și
alb. nu ajung pentru explicarea
cuv. rom., deoarece trecerea lui
l ›
r se produce numai în elementele care aparțin fondului tradițional: în consecință, se poate admite doar că cuvîntul
ngr. este total independent de cel
rom., cum credem, sau că ambele provin dintr-un cuvînt anterior. Ultima ipoteză pare să fi sedus pe majoritatea cercetătorilor: cuvînt dacic (Hasdeu,
Cuv. din Bătrîni,I, 280), tracic (Pascu,
Arch. Rom., VI, 224), balcanic (Hubschmidt,
Sard., I, 105); preindo-european (
M. L. Wagner,
Arch. Rom., XV, 228; S. Pop,
Romance Philology, III, 117-34; Lahovary 333), ipoteze care presupun toate un *
magula pe atît de obscur pe cît e de nesigur. Semnalăm că s-a gîndit și la
lat. macula (Diez, I, 256); la un
lat. *magulum (Meyer,
Neugr. St., III, 40; Papahagi,
Notițe, 33; Pascu, II, 62); la un
sl. *
magula, care ar explica și
sl. mogyla, v. movilă (E. Schwarz,
Arch. slaw. Phil., XLI, 134;
cf. Wędkiewicz,
R. de Slavistique, VI, 111), dar care nu explică rotacismul din
rom.; la
sl. (
sb.)
gomila (Cihac, II, 182), sau
bg. mogila (Conev 39), ambele la fel de imposibile; la un gepid
*mögila (Diculescu; Scriban), total dubios; și că, adesea, filologia se limitează să semnaleze corespondența cu
alb. maguljë, fără să tragă de aici nici o concluzie (Densusianu,
Hlr., 352; Philippide, II, 721; Meyer 119; Rosetti, II, 118), sau, dimpotrivă, dînd ca sigură
der. din albaneză (Berneker, II, 69; Densusianu,
GS, I, 351).
