Var. chitic (mai ales cu ultimul sens). Origine îndoielnică, probabil din
piti „a ascunde”, etimologic „a face mic, a face invizibil”. În general, se consideră că ar fi vorba de
gr. πίθηϰος „maimuță”,
cf. sl. pitikŭ (Miklosich,
Fremdw., 118; Cihac, II, 687), dar această apropiere pare întîmplătoare. –
