atol,Ortasında lagün adı verilen bir göl bulunan, kısmen veya tamamen lagünü çevreleyen adacıklara denir. Atolller her zaman dairesel yapıda olmamakla birlikte düzinelerce kilometre çapında kapalı bir şekil oluşturan ve ortasında yaklaşık 50 m ya da daha derin bir lagün bulunduran mercan resiflerinin oluşur.
