Алігатор - крокодил у роді Алігатор сімейства Alligatoridae. Два живих виду - американський алігатор і китайський алігатор. Крім того, від відомих залишків копалин відомі кілька вимерлих видів алігатора. Алігатори вперше з'явилися в епоху олігоцену близько 37 мільйонів років тому. Назва "алігатор" - це, мабуть, англізована форма ель-лагарто, іспанський термін "ящірка", яку ранні іспанські дослідники та поселенці у Флориді назвали алігатором.
