Неоднозначність є атрибутом будь-якого поняття, ідеї, заяви або вимоги, значення, намір або тлумачення яких не можуть бути остаточно вирішені за правилом або процесом, що складається з кінцевого числа кроків. Поняття неоднозначності, як правило, суперечить невизначеності. У неоднозначності, допускаються конкретні та чіткі тлумачення, тоді як з інформацією, яка є невизначеною, важко сформувати будь-яке тлумачення на бажаному рівні специфіки. Контекст може відігравати певну роль у вирішенні невизначеності. Наприклад, однакова частина інформації може бути неоднозначною в одному контексті та однозначною в іншій.
