Фібриляція передсердь є найчастішим аномальним ритмом серця. Це може не викликати жодних симптомів, але часто пов'язане з серцебиттям, непритомністю, біль у грудях або застійна серцева недостатність. Причину АФ може бути не визначено. АФ може бути ідентифікований клінічно під час прийому пульсу, і його наявність може бути підтверджена з ЕКГ, що демонструє відсутність Р-хвиль і частоту нерегулярних шлуночків. У АФ нормальний звичайний електричний імпульс, породжений сіноатриальним вузлом у правому передсерді серця, перевантажений дезорганізованими електричними імпульсами, що зазвичай походять з коренів легеневих вен. Це призводить до нерегулярного проведення імпульсів шлуночка, які генерують серцебиття. АФ може відбуватися в епізодах, що тривають від декількох хвилин до дня або можуть бути постійними за своїм характером. Багато медикаментозних захворювань збільшує ризик розвитку АФ, зокрема мітрального стенозу. Ризик інсульту збільшується в 5 разів у осіб з АФ. Ступінь підвищеного ризику може бути суттєвою, залежно від наявності додаткових факторів ризику.
