У біохімії хемосинтез є біологічним перетворенням одного або більше молекул вуглецю та поживних речовин в органічну речовину, використовуючи окислення неорганічних молекул або метану як джерела енергії, а не сонячного світла, як у фотосинтезі. Хемоавтотрофи, організми, що одержують вуглець через хемосинтез, філогенетично різноманітні, але у групи, які включають помітне або біогеохімічно важливе таксономічне середовище, включають гамма окислювача сірки та епсілон-протеобактерії, аквафізичні речовини, метаногенні археї та нейтрофільні окислювачі заліза бактерій. Venenivibrio stagnispumantis отримує енергію, окислюючи газ водню. Багато мікроорганізмів у темних областях Світового океану також використовують хемосинтез для отримання біомаси з молекул одного вуглецю. Можна виділити дві категорії. У рідкісних місцях, на яких доступні молекули водню, енергія, наявна у реакції між CO2 і H2, може бути достатньо великою, щоб керувати виробництвом біомаси. Як альтернатива, у більшості океанічних середовищ енергія для хемосинтезу походить від реакцій, в яких окислюються такі речовини, як сірководень або аміак.
