У медицині кома - стан несвідомого, що триває більше шести годин, в якому людина: не може бути прокинута; як правило, не реагує на болісні подразники, світло або звук; відсутній нормальний цикл сну-пробудження; і не ініціює добровільні дії. Людина в стані коми описується як коматозний. Коматозна людина демонструє повну відсутність бодрствованості і не здатний свідомо відчувати, говорити, чути або рухатися. Щоб пацієнт підтримував свідомість, повинні функціонувати два важливих неврологічних компоненти. Перша - кори головного мозку - сіра речовина, яка покриває зовнішній шар мозку.
