Комедія, в сучасному значенні цього терміна, - це будь-який дискурс чи робота, яка загалом має на меті бути гумором або розважатись, викликаючи сміх, особливо в театрі, телебаченні, кіно та комедії. Це відчуття цього терміну треба ретельно відрізняти від його академічного, а саме комічного театру, чиї західні витоки знаходяться в Стародавній Греції. В афінській демократії на громадську думку виборців вплинула політична сатира, виконана комічними поетами в театрах. Театральний жанр може бути просто описаний як драматичний спектакль, який вписує два суспільства один проти одного в забавний агон чи конфлікт. Northrop Frye чудово зобразив ці дві протилежні сторони як "Товариство молоді" та "Товариство старого", але ця дихотомія рідко називається цілком задовільним поясненням. Подальший вигляд характеризує істотний агон комедії як боротьбу між відносно безсилою молоддю та суспільними конвенціями, які створюють перешкоди для його надії.
