Ковалентний зв'язок - це хімічний зв'язок, який передбачає розподіл електронних пар між атомами. Стабільний баланс привабливих і сил відштовхування між атомами, коли вони поділяють електрони, називають ковалентним зв'язком. Для багатьох молекул розподіл електронів дозволяє кожному атому досягти еквівалента повної зовнішньої оболонки, що відповідає стабільній електронній конфігурації. Ковалентні зв'язки включають багато видів взаємодій, включаючи σ-зв'язування, π-зв'язування, зв'язування метал-метал, агостичні взаємодії та трицентрові двоелектронні зв'язки. Термін "ковалентний зв'язок" відноситься до 1939 року. Префікс спільно означає спільно, асоційований в дії, менший ступінь партнерства тощо; таким чином, "співвалентний зв'язок", по суті, означає, що атоми поділяють "валентність", наприклад, обговорюється в теорії валентних зв'язків.
