Кримінальний кодекс - це документ, який компенсує все або значну частину кримінального законодавства певної юрисдикції. Як правило, кримінальний кодекс містить правопорушення, визнані в юрисдикції, штрафи, які можуть бути накладені за ці злочини та деякі загальні положення. Кримінальні кодекси відносно поширені в юрисдикціях цивільного права, які, як правило, створюють правові системи навколо кодів і принципів, які є відносно абстрактними та застосовують їх у кожному конкретному випадку. І навпаки, вони зустрічаються рідко в юрисдикціях загального права. Запропоноване введення кримінального кодексу в Англії та Уельсі було важливим проектом Комісії з прав людини з 1968 по 2008 рік. Через сильну традицію прецеденту в юрисдикції, а отже, і велику кількість суперечливих судових рішень та неоднозначних "загальних правопорушень" а також часто суперечливий характер англійського права - створення дуже задовільного коду стало дуже важким. Проект був офіційно відмовлений у 2008 році, хоча з 2009 року він був відновлений. У Сполучених Штатах існує типовий Кримінальний кодекс, який сам по собі не є законом, але який є основою кримінального права багатьох держав.
