Дихроїзм має два пов'язані, але чіткі значення в оптиці. Дихроїчний матеріал - це той, який призводить до того, що видиме світло розбивається на різні пучки різних довжин хвиль, або в тому, що світлові промені, що мають різні поляризації, поглинаються різними об'ємами. Первинний зміст дихроїчного, з грецького дихроусу, двоколірна, відноситься до будь-якого оптичного пристрою, який може розподілити світловий промінь на два промені з різними довжинами хвиль.
