Диктатор - правитель, який володіє абсолютною владою. Держава, керована диктатором, називається диктатурою. Слово зародилося як титул магістрату у Стародавньому Римі, призначеному Сенатом для управління республікою в надзвичайні ситуації. Як і термін "тиран", а в меншій мірі "автократ", "диктатор" став використовуватися майже винятково як нетитулярний термін для репресивного, навіть зловживання, але мав рідкісне сучасне титулярне використання.
