У оптиці дифракційна гратка являє собою оптичний компонент з періодичною структурою, яка розщеплює і дифрагує світло на кілька променів, що рухаються в різних напрямках. Напрямки цих променів залежать від інтервалу решітки та довжини хвилі світла, так що решітка діє як дисперсійний елемент. Через це решітки звичайно використовуються в монохроматорах і спектрометрах. Фотографічний слайд з тонким малюнком фіолетових ліній утворює складну решітку. Для практичних застосувань грати, як правило, мають гребені або решітки на їх поверхні, а не темні лінії. Такі решітки можуть бути як прозорими, так і відбивними. Також виробляються грати, які модулюють фазу, а не амплітуду падаючого світла, часто використовуючи голографію. Принципи дифракційних решіток були виявлені Джеймсом Грегорі, приблизно через рік після експериментів Ньютона з призми, спочатку з артефактами, такими як пташині пір'я.
