Дифракція відноситься до різних явищ, які виникають, коли хвиля стикається з перешкодою або щілиною. У класичній фізиці дифракційне явище описується як інтерференція хвиль за принципом Гюйгенса Френеля. Ці характерні поведінки виявляються, коли хвиля стикається з перешкодою або щілиною, яка може бути порівняною за розмірами до довжини хвилі. Подібні ефекти виникають, коли світлова хвиля проходить через середовище з різним показником заломлення або коли звукова хвиля проходить через середовище з різним акустичним імпедансом. Дифракція відбувається з усіма хвилями, включаючи звукові хвилі, водні хвилі та електромагнітні хвилі, такі як видиме світло, рентгенівські промені та радіохвилі. Оскільки фізичні об'єкти мають хвилеподібні властивості, дифракція також зустрічається з речовиною і може вивчатися відповідно до принципів квантової механіки. Італійський учений Франческо Марія Грімальді ввів слово "дифракція" і вперше записав точні спостереження за явищем в 1660 році.
