Європейський економічний простір складається з трьох з чотирьох держав-членів Європейської асоціації вільної торгівлі та 27 з 28 держав-членів Європейського союзу, причому Хорватія тимчасово застосовує цю угоду до її ратифікації усіма країнами ЄЕЗ. Вона була створена 1 січня 1994 року за згодою з Європейським Співтовариством. Це дозволяє державам ЄАВТ-ЄЕЗ брати участь у внутрішньому ринку ЄС, не будучи членами ЄС. Вони приймають майже все законодавство ЄС щодо єдиного ринку, крім законів про сільське господарство та рибальство. Проте, вони також сприяють формуванню нових відповідних політик та законодавства ЄЕЗ на ранній стадії, як частину процесу офіційного формування рішень. Крім того, незалежність та пряме членство міжнародних органів за своїм власним указом означають, що країни можуть брати участь та підписати різні конвенції, такі як Базельська конвенція 1992 року, які приймаються ЄС лише через багато років. Один член ЄАВТ, Швейцарія, не приєднався до ЄЕЗ, але має ряд двосторонніх угод, включаючи угоду про вільну торгівлю, з ЄС.
