У етнолінгвістиці, ендомії та екзоніми є назвами етнічних груп і де вони живуть, як це визначено відповідно самими групами та сторонніми. Ендонімом або автономним ім'ям називається етнічна група до свого географічного об'єкта, або ім'я, яке називає себе етнічною групою. Екзонмін або ксенонім - це ім'я, яке етнічна група чи географічна особа називає інша етнічна група. Екзоніми та ендоніми можуть бути назви місць, етнічних груп, мов або окремих осіб. Що стосується географічних ознак, то Група експертів Організації Об'єднаних Націй по географічним назвам визначає: ▪ Ендонім: назва географічної ознаки в офіційній або добре встановленої мові, що відбувається в тій місцевості, де ця функція знаходиться. ▪ Exonym: назва, що використовується в конкретній мові для географічних об'єктів, розташованих за межами області, де вона розмовляється, і відрізняються за формою від назви, яка використовується офіційною або добре встановленою мовою тієї області, де розташована географічна особливість.
