Facebook була заснована 4 лютого 2004 року Марком Цукербергом зі своїми сусідніми коледжами та колегами зі студентами Гарвардського університету Едуардо Саверіном, Ендрю МакКоллом, Дастіном Московіцем та Крісом Хьюзом. Засновники спочатку обмежували членство веб-сайту студентам Гарвардського університету, але потім розширили його до коледжів у Бостонському районі, Ліги Плюща та Стенфордський університет.
