Федерація
Федерація, також відома як федеративна держава, є політичною одиницею, що характеризується об'єднанням частково самогурядних держав або регіонів під центральним урядом. У федерації самоврядування статусу складових держав, а також розподіл влади між ними та центральним урядом, зазвичай конституційно закріплені і не можуть бути змінені одностороннім рішенням однієї зі сторін, держав або федеральних політичний орган. Уряд чи конституційна структура, яка знаходиться в федерації, називається федералізмом. Це можна вважати протилежністю іншої системи - унітарному державі. Німеччина з шістнадцятьма землями є прикладом федерації, тоді як сусідня Австрія та її Бундесліндр були унітарною державою з адміністративними поділами, які стали об'єднаними, а сусідня Франція на противагу завжди була унітарною. Федерації можуть бути багатонаціональними та охоплювати велику територію, хоча це не обов'язково. Початкові угоди створюють стабільність, яка заохочує інші спільні інтереси, зменшує розбіжності між різними територіями та дає їм ще більше спільну основу.
