Ієрархія - це розташування предметів, в яких елементи представлені як "вище", "нижче" або "на тому ж рівні, що і" один одного. Взагалі, ієрархію можна математично моделювати як кореневе дерево: корінь дерева формує верхній рівень, а діти певної вершини знаходяться на тому ж рівні, нижче їхнього загального батька.
