Гомініди утворюють таксономічну родину приматів, в тому числі чотири існуючих пологів: ▪ шимпанзе - 2 види; ▪ горили - 2 види; ▪ люди - 1 вид; ▪ орангутанки - 2 види. Термін "гомінід" також використовується у більш обмеженому сенсі як гомініни або "людина та родичі людей, ближчі шимпанзе". У цьому застосуванні всі види гомінідів, крім Homo sapiens, вимерли. Ряд відомих вимерлих пологів згруповані з людьми в підгрупі Homininae, інші - з орангутангами в підродину Ponginae.
