Хокрост є паразитарною нематодою, яка живе в тонкому кишечнику свого господарника, що може бути ссавцем, таким як собака, кішка або людина. Два види клюшових хробаків зазвичай заражають людей Ancylostoma duodenale і Necator americanus. A. duodenale переважають на Близькому Сході, в Північній Африці, в Індії та на півдні Європи, а в Америці, Африці на південь від Сахари, Південно-Східної Азії, Китаї та Індонезії переважають N. americanus. A. brasiliense і A. toaseforme заражають котів, тоді як A. caninum заражає ікей. Uncinaria stenocephala інфікує як собак, так і кішки. A. caninum інфікувало людей, з 150 випадків, повідомлених в Брісбені, Австралія з 1988-1992 років. Хоккорн є набагато меншим, ніж гігантський круглий черв'як, і ускладнення міграції тканин та механічної обструкції, що часто спостерігаються при зараженні круглого черв'яка, рідше зустрічаються при зараженні клюшці.
