Ареометр - інструмент, що використовується для вимірювання питомої ваги рідин; тобто співвідношення щільності рідини до щільності води. Аідрометр зазвичай виготовляється зі скла та складається з циліндричного стовбура та лампочки, зваженої ртуттю або свинцевим дробом, щоб воно було плавним у вертикальному положенні. Перевіряючу рідину висипають у високий контейнер, який часто випускається циліндром, і гідрометр м'яко опускають у рідину до вільного плавання. Відзначається точка, в якій поверхня рідини торкається стебла аерометра. Гідрометри зазвичай містять шкалу всередині стебла, так що питома вага може бути прочитана безпосередньо.
