У економіці гіперінфляція виникає тоді, коли в країні спостерігаються дуже високі і, як правило, прискорюючі темпи інфляції цін, які швидко знецінюють реальну вартість місцевої валюти, і змушує населення мінімізувати свої запаси місцевих грошей. Населення зазвичай переходить на зберігання відносно стабільних іноземних валют. За таких умов загальний рівень цін у межах економіки швидко зростає, оскільки офіційна валюта швидко втрачає реальну вартість. Значення економічних статей залишається відносно більш стабільним з точки зору іноземних валют. Проте, відносні ціни змінюються протягом періоду гіперінфляції; наприклад, ціни на продукти харчування в Німеччині протягом 1913-1923 років зросли на 43% менше, ніж у одягу, тоді як вони зросли в 80 разів більше, ніж орендні ставки, і в 24 рази більше, ніж індекс цін акцій.
