У молекулярній біології індуктор є молекулою, яка починає експресію генів. Індуктор може зв'язуватися з репрессорами або активаторами. Індуктори функціонують шляхом відключення репрессорів. Цей ген виражений, оскільки індуктор зв'язується з репрессором. Зв'язування індуктора з репрессором запобігає зв'язуванню репрессора з оператором. РНК-полімераза може потім розпочати транскрипцію операнних генів. Індуктори також функціонують шляхом зв'язування з активаторами. Активатори, як правило, слабо зв'язуються з послідовностями ДНК активатора, якщо індуктор відсутній. Активатор зв'язується з індуктором, і комплекс зв'язується з послідовністю активації та активує цільовий ген. Видалення індуктора зупиняє транскрипцію. Оскільки необхідна невелика молекула індуктора, підвищена експресія цільового гена називається індукцією. Оперний лактози є одним з прикладів індуцибельної системи.
