Ізостазія - це термін, що використовується в геології для позначення стану гравітаційної рівноваги між земної літосфери та астеносфери, така, що тектонічні плити "плавають" на висоті, яка залежить від їх товщини і щільності. Ця концепція покликана пояснити, наскільки різноманітні топографічні висоти можуть існувати на поверхні Землі. Коли певна область літосфери досягає стану ізостазії, вона вважається в ізостатичному рівновазі. Ізостазія - це не процес, який руйнує рівновагу, а скоріше той, який його відновлює. Загальновизнано, що Земля - це динамічна система, яка реагує на навантаження різними способами.
