У лівій правій політиці ліва політика - це політичні позиції чи дії, які приймають або підтримують соціальну рівність, часто протиставляючи соціальній ієрархії та соціальній нерівності. Це, як правило, виправдовується на підставі занепокоєння тих, хто у суспільстві сприймається як незахищене відносно інших, і припущення про існування невиправданих нерівностей, які потрібно зменшити або скасувати. Політичні терміни "лівий і правий" були створені під час французької революції, маючи на увазі розташування сидінь у загальних установах: ті, хто сидів наліво, загалом виступали проти монархії та підтримували революцію, включаючи створення республіки та секуляризації, тоді як ті, хто право було підтримувати традиційні інститути Старого режиму. Використання терміна "лівий" стало більш помітним після відновлення французької монархії в 1815 році, коли це було застосовано до "Незалежних". Термін пізніше був застосований до низки рухів, особливо республіканізму під час французької революції, соціалізму, комунізму та анархізму.
